Sudanese General Authority for Radio and Television Broadcasting
1.Overview
In July 2009, a decree was issued by the Council of Ministers establishing the Sudanese General Authority for Radio and Television Broadcasting
2.Objectives
- Utilizing modern means, media, and the internet to achieve the mission of radio and television broadcasting.
- Regulating broadcasting and re-broadcasting, and licensing radio and television stations.
- Strengthening engineering and technical relations with regional and international peer institutions and organizations.
- Developing the technical capabilities of employees.
- Technical cooperation with state-level (regional) agencies operating in the field.
- Utilizing communication means for broadcasting and re-broadcasting for licensed entities.
- Providing services and investments in the field.
3.Powers of the Authority
In addition to the powers stipulated in the General Authorities Act of 2003, the Authority shall have the following powers:
- Establishing and managing transmission and communication stations for broadcasting.
- Importing necessary technical equipment for broadcasting.
- Procuring machinery, spare parts, transport means, and other requirements.
- Investing its funds and entering into contracts.
- Owning, buying, selling, and leasing land and real estate.
- Accepting donations and borrowing funds in accordance with the law.
4.Board of Directors
The Board's duties include approving specialized employment contracts, reviewing the public impact of broadcasting, issuing research directives, approving investment projects/loans, and defining the Authority's internal departments and branches.
5.General Manager
The General Manager is the chief executive officer responsible to the Board for financial, administrative, and technical activities. The Responsibilities include :
Implementing policies, managing daily operations, representing the Authority in international organizations, and proposing the annual budget.
6.Radio and TV Coverage |
Ground Stations
- Omdurman Station (1995): Originally analog, now serves as a backup to the new station.
- Omdurman 2 Station (1995): An analog station.
- New Ground Station (2009): Entered service in 2010 using advanced technology.
Radio Coverage (MW & SW)
- Small-capacity Medium Wave (MW) stations are located in various cities : (Atbara, Dongola, Kassala, etc.) with a daytime range of 100km.
- Medium-capacity stations (Khartoum, El Obeid, Singa) cover a radius of 300km.
- FM Networks: Work is underway to expand the FM network across 42 cities.
Television Coverage
Satellite: Sudan is covered via Arabsat, Nilesat, and NSS 7 (C-Band and Ku-Band).
Terrestrial: Small and medium stations exist in approximately 96 cities for re-broadcasting. A replacement of television stations in 29 major cities ( covering a radius of 50 km from the center of each city) is nearing completion,
